Verdant Tea (Special)

Recent Tasting Notes

Thought I’d try this again, since I found it when I was cleaning up yesterday.

Smells like coriander and pine forests.

Umm.

Anyone whose address I have want it? I have the 1oz blend club pack and I’ve tried it twice. It needs to go to a home where it will be appreciated.

(steeped twice)

Preparation
170 °F / 76 °C 3 min, 30 sec 1 tsp 4 OZ / 118 ML
OMGsrsly

I might just randomly send it out to someone. That could be fun. :)

Sil

gross

ohfancythat

The name sounds so good….wtf

OMGsrsly

Yeah, it’s not. I can add a sample, whatshesaid. Their yabao is really piney.

ohfancythat

I don’t even know what yabao is, hahaha

Frolic

You don’t have my address but if you haven’t decided who to send it too yet I"ve been wanting to try it.

OMGsrsly

Sure thing, Frolic! Go ahead and send me a message. I’ll follow you now. I’ll keep a teaspoon aside for whatshesaid. :)

Hmm.

Today I’m getting more baked cookie, but there’s still that underlying current of pine forest. I’m not quite munching on the needles, but it’s darn close.

Definitely interesting, but I prefer the fairy tea they have with yabao in, whatever it’s called. I know I have some around here somewhere… ;)

This will be steeped many times today. I’m curious as to how it changes, even with a cold!

Preparation
175 °F / 79 °C 2 min, 0 sec 3 tsp 8 OZ / 236 ML
mrs.stenhouse12

Fairy tea as in Eight Treasures Yabao? That is possibly my all time favorite tea blend. I constantly hoard it and only sip it on very very special occasions/moods :D

OMGsrsly

Yeah, that might be it. I have two versions of it now. I don’t mind it, but I prefer the ginger sage. :)

mrs.stenhouse12

Mmmm ginger sage is my FAVORITE herbal haha, I am currently out and going crazy without it lol, need to place an order in March! Eight Treasures wins for favorite actual tea blend lol, but ginger sage might be my favorite tea ever actually..

OMGsrsly

Mmm. I really want some right now, but I’m getting through my bag pretty quick, being sick. I wasn’t planning on another Verdant order for a while, but might need to push it up. :)

It, umm, smells like I’ve stuck my face in a spruce tree out in the forest. Cold, icy, woody, frozen tree pitch. I haven’t had the yabao before, so I’m not sure what part is giving me this scent.

When I think of snickerdoodle, I think of a vanilla cookie that has been rolled in cinnamon sugar then baked. Is that not what a snickerdoodle is? That’s not what this tea is.

The tea tastes like the forest. All bundled up on a crisp winter day, pushing through the forest, looking for the perfect tree. It’s quite herbal under there too, almost medicinal. Quite earthy, as well. And I feel the warmth of the ginger.

So. Weird.

Preparation
185 °F / 85 °C 3 min, 0 sec
Dexter

As per Wikipedia “A snickerdoodle is a type of cookie made with butter or oil, sugar, and flour rolled in cinnamon sugar.” So yes, you are correct that’s what a snickerdoodle is. Sorry this tea doesn’t live up to it’s name…

NofarS

Verdant’s Yabao has that pine taste. Try Norbu tea’s Yabao for a sweet, baked bread tea.

JustJames

@NorbuS that’s a handy tidbit!

OMGsrsly

Ooh. I have some of the yabao from Norbu. I’ll have to try it soon. :)

keychange

‘looking for the perfect tree’ You made me laugh!

OMGsrsly

Umm. I just realized how that might come across. Christmas tree!

sipdown! since the last of this will be heading over to terri to try. Still not a fab of this one. it’s just kinda…well..boring? I steeped it for 4 mins and while that mafe the bergamot finally present in the steep it didn’t mesh all that well with the other tastes going on for me. aah well, can’t win them all!

EG this is not. This is zhu wrong and LB….and maybe a couple spices thrown in. Again 1 min steeps is stupid. lol Pretty much feeling like i could just toss the two teas together and get mostly the same blend. Will try to play with this a bit more later. still like it..but feel more like this is like other teas than being an EG blend.

Lala

I have not tried this specific blend, but the other blends from verdant I have tried, I have always overleafed to get better flavour.

Bonnie

You do have to steep this longer…really.

Sil

Agreed Bonnie. Thy 1 min timings on all their blends is driving me nuts lol

CelebriTEA

Steep longer, but this is really. GOOD!!!

Sil

celebriTEA…your forget..me and the BLERGAMOT don’t get along :)

Kittenna

I know I’m late to the commenting here, but I’m just going with my standard infusion parameters for all Verdant teas, since they seem to work pretty well. I’m pretty sure 1 minute would be way too watery for most blends unless I’ve way overleafed.

nothing to say about this one really…tried again with it and it still isn’t any sort of yummy for me. I don’t much like yabao and after a few cups of trying this out under various conditions it’s still nothing i’m enjoying. the last little bit of mine is off to terri to see if she can pull some delight out of this one.

mrs.stenhouse12

I mostly get yabao out of it too, which is okay as I like it, but haven’t found the sweet spot yet either, I’ll try with my filtered filtered water this week I think

mrs.stenhouse12

*filtered ugh not supposed to be there twice lol silly phone

Sil

haha

33

meh. 1 minute steep is stupid. i will rant more about that i’m sure. Drinkable but as not a fan of yabao…esp silverbuds yabao, i wasn’t hoping for much. it’s ok but i’ll have to play a bit more.

JustJames

sil, you’re awesome. xoxo

OMGsrsly

Maybe I’ll try this. How long would you suggest? 3 mins?

JustJames

i’ve done up to 8…. it’s never gone bitter. it’s a bud not a blend, exceptionally forgiving. awesome, awesome as a latte IMO. keep meaning to add nutmeg.

OMGsrsly

I’ll try 185F (85C)/3 mins, I know it’s resteepable.

Bonnie

3 minutes…at least…don’t underleaf either. All the blends this month needed at least 3 minutes no matter what the directions say…Verdant can get mad at me (which they won’t) but this is gospel. 3 minutes…

OMGsrsly

I used almost 1 tbsp for 1 cup water, it’s pretty standard for me.

sipdown!(178) with the last little bit of this off to terri for her to try. I didn’t mind this one. it’s a pretty decent mint blend if you’re in to that sort of thing and as i’ve mentioned before, it’s different enough from stacy’s peppermint patty that both could hang out in my cupboard.

I’ve got som backlogging to do and no idea how long my internet will be up to let me do it. While we have power here at our place which i am SUPER thankful for, the internet is still spotty and having issues.

Let me preface this by saying i HATE that all verdant’s blends seem to have a steeping parameter of boiling, 1 min. The teas never taste delicious and wonderful until you change those…and really? every tea needs boiling? hmmmm

This one is from yesterday. It’s tasty, but nothing to write home about. That being said, I would also be fine having this AND stacy’s peppermint patty in my cupboard as they both bring something slightly different to the table. :)

Dexter

Glad you have power. I’ve been lost in my own little world for the last few days, hadn’t seen any news and didn’t realize how bad the storms have been out that way. Stay safe, and I hope your power stays on. :))

Bonnie

(My personal feeling about most herbals is this…unless I’m sick or want to sleep…which is almost never…herbals are great mixers with puerh, black tea or whatever (had cocoa nibs, cinnamon, laoshan black….whatever.)

This is delicious and I’m hoping it helps my immunity since we’re flying up to visit my parents this week! Curious to try it with cider or wine as suggested.

Wow, I absolutely love the smell of this chai dry and steeping! Thanks to the carby sweet potato quality of the base and the ginger it smells like a pan of freshly baked soft gingerbread. The flavor then surprises you by being quite peppercorn-y. I’m trying this steeped like standard tea, but I am pretty sure this will love being made with honey and milk. Very nice. One of the best chais I’ve tried, I love the spices and the balance.

Sounds good!

Bonnie

I adore this peppery chai too!!!

ifjuly

Your love of it and mention of the pepper notes is what convinced me to try it, Bonnie! Really jazzed that I did. :D

Bonnie

All the haters can ship it to you and I because I don’t get it. Same with Yu Lu Yan Black. (But then…I have nutso tastebuds that can taste DEEP stuff…which sometimes isn’t good…I almost have to taste in a clean room…no scent or anything…no scented soaps, no perfume, always filtered water…can’t eat and drink tea to review…blah blah blah)

Perhaps I under-steeped this one, because although pleasant, it was unremarkable to me.
I make home-made snickerdoodles with cream cheese and roll the balls in a mixture of cinnamon and sugar…I tasted no cinnamon, and if snicker doodles? …very generic :-/
Sorry Verdant…

Bonnie

You have to steep this at least 3 minutes or longer and sweeten it. (I added cream too…to get a more cookie taste but without is ok). Short steeping these blends is too bland.

CelebriTEA

thank you Bonnie!
I will try again…steep longer and add cream :~)

Bonnie

Happy New Year!

This still isn’t tasting right again. Is it my Finnium, or something else? Tastes bitter and a bit off, with less cocoa than I remember.

Preparation
200 °F / 93 °C 5 min, 0 sec 2 tsp 12 OZ / 354 ML
CelebriTEA

My last batch wasnt as good as the first, but it is still one of my favorites.

Hm. There’s something off about this today. Something bitter in the fennel is my guess? I don’t get it. I think my tastebuds are off. Boooo….

1.5 tsp in 12oz.

Interestingly, the bit of this that I got from (I think) CelebriTEA had zero chocolate or cacao or whatever in it. This blend that I just got direct from Verdant? Full of big pieces of what looks and tastes like something cocoa-ish. I think I like this blend more.

200 °F / 93 °C 8 min or more

Okay, so I enjoy this so much that I caved and bought some Verdant last night. 2 oz of this in that order. It definitely helped kick whatever stomach ick I’ve been fighting the past week.

Courtney

Glad you’re feeling better!

VariaTEA

Everyone is buying tea! I want to place an order and I think it is because I miss getting tea mail so I am itching for something new. Meanwhile, I have like 8 swaps going and at least two orders on their way.

MissB

I’m in the same boat — I’ve sent out about $100 in shipping’s worth of packages last week, and… still only a small dent in my cupboard. It’s hard to avoid tea shopping!

VariaTEA

I was able to avoid placing orders because I know that in the swaps I have teas from different companies. I figure I should try the teas first and that way know if I like it and should buy more or I don’t like them. I was going to buy the Choco Honeyberry from Steep City but the shipping was insane which made me lose interest. Same goes for Whispering Pines S’mores.

MissB

Ah, I would’ve sent you some S’mores had I known.

VariaTEA

Haha. Of course you would, you are a tea enabler. Although I am sure I will eventually try it.

OMGsrsly

For me, I’m not buying but if I run out of something I love, I will re-stock. It’s a decent justification, and I’ve been good so far!

Hung out with a friend last night who has been fighting a cold for som time now, and now I’m feeling a bit off myself. Time to crack out the elderberry! Steeped this just over 18 minutes, and it’s still delicious, although I am getting more licorice than previous incarnations.

Hope you can fight it off!

Aw, thank you. :)

Hope you feel better SOON…this is my favorite tea even when not sick.

So… my last sample (that was a sipdown) came from OMGsrsly. This sample (a full pouch!) came from CelebriTEA. Wowza! So glad I love this.

Working on transitioning to a brand new laptop. Whee! I just wish it were a bit easier. Win 8 is a bit… weird. Love the keyboard though, and the actual laptop itself. And so, I’ll be up late tweaking. May even set up the new printer, too.

Preparation
Boiling 8 min or more
VariaTEA

I had to switch to Windows 8 a couple months back when I dropped my old laptop and I hated it at first but once you adjust, it is amazing. Hope you adjust soon!

JustJames

for me windows 8 boiled down to ’don’t overthink it’, now it’s easy. =0)

Dexter

I’m rebelling against Windows 8 – choosing to use the desktop not the apps…so far that’s working for me. (I still miss the start key)

MissB

You can get the start key again; I used a program called Iobit just now that basically got rid of all the crud the system auto-installed, and gave me my Start Menu back. That was really the only thing I had to have. :)

Tuscanteal

I wasn’t a fan either… it seems designed for a tablet, which isn’t what I have. I installed the interface that makes it look like classic windows though.

Thank you Sil for labeling our swap with your handle on them; I need to start doing this as well, and marking the ones I receive as I get them. Why? Because it could be one of four different people’s swaps. JustJames? CelebriTEA? akgrowngirl? OMGsrsly? I dunno. I also have several packets of this now, and huge thanks for that as well! It’s become a favorite.

The deep, dark purple in this makes me want to dye wool with it. I’m getting closer to my dream of dealing with wool from shearing to finished product, and I think when I get to dying my own wool, it’ll be with elderberries. http://sewnnatural.com/blog/2012/09/natural-dyeing-with-elderberry.html

Thanks to OMGsrsly for this lovely sample and swap earlier today! So much fun.

I may have steeped this for 20 minutes. Possibly. It is still delicious as-is. It’s a lovely dark purple — which makes me think I should try and figure out what it is that turns the tea this color, to dye wool with. It’s naturally sweet, zero astringency, full, with a bit of bite to it that isn’t hot, more zesty and sparkly. Hard to describe. Definitely on my to-order list.
